Policy in a Pub: Cannabis Legalization in Canada – What’s Next?

October 18, 2018

Cannabis is set to be legally available across Canada on October 17th. Legalization will address many of the shortcomings of the current policy framework, but will in turn create a series of new challenges.

These challenges will stretch across multiple levels of government and will impact numerous policy areas including health, social and economic policy, public safety, criminal justice, enforcement, taxation and Indigenous self-government. Many of these challenges will force decision-makers to make important tradeoffs between policy priorities.

Will the policies that Canada’s governments have proposed adequately balance these tradeoffs? How will we know what is working and what isn’t? What will we need to keep an eye on?

Join us on October 18th for a lively panel discussion and Q&A on these topics.

PANELISTS:
The Honourable Tony Dean
Senate of Canada

Jean-François Crépault
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Rolanda Elijah
Chippewas of the Thames First Nation

Akwasi Owusu-Bempah
University of Toronto

We are happy to announce that we will be hosting our event at a NEW LOCATION! Please join us in “The Nest” of the Wickson Social located at 5 St Joseph St. in Toronto. Order a beverage at our private bar and enjoy some complimentary finger foods while we engage in a lively panel discussion on cannabis policy. Seating is limited, so arrive early.

The Mowat Centre is committed to connecting professionals from across the broader public policy community by bringing together people from the public, private, non-profit, academic and media sectors.
