Video: Bold Ideas – Making post-secondary education available at no cost to all Canadians

June 22, 2017

In the latest release in Mowat’s Bold Ideas series, Buzzfeed’s Elamin Abdelmahmoud proposes making post-secondary education available to all Canadians – at zero cost. This would address significant gaps in access to post-secondary education that exist between Canadians from low-income homes and those from homes with higher levels of income, Abdelmahmoud notes.

It is critical in today’s job market to close that gap to provide lower-income Canadians with the same level of job opportunities as their higher-income peers, explains Abdelmahmoud. He further discusses how education has evolved in Canada over the years and addresses potential challenges to achieving free post-secondary education in Canada.

As Canada marks its 150th birthday this year, Canadians have a historic opportunity not only to celebrate a century and a half of accomplishments, but also to look forward to what we can achieve in the future. The Mowat Centre is releasing a series of short written pieces and video interviews that look ahead and present a variety of bold, potentially transformative policy ideas.
